MY LIFE RESET | Because At 30...

Happy Almost September! I hope everyone's summer has been good to them, I've been busy per usual but blogging has been on my mind as always. I've been writing, editing and re-structuring this blog post for about two weeks now and I think (well I know) I'm ready to share it with you all. Ever since turning 30 back in February it feels like life just started all over again for me, but through it all I feel a lot stronger than I was six months ago so I want to share with my journey to "THE YEAR OF ME".

Because at 30...that's when life actually makes sense. That's when you give ZERO fucks about what the world thinks about your hair, outfit, who your dating and what kind of job you have because you feel that sure of yourself. It's when you start to see people's true colors and where you should be focusing your energy on and what in life truly matters, because at 30 you know exactly who you are and where your going. I turned 30 on February 18th and thought I was going to die (lol...no seriously, my anxiety was at all time high) because I had this "idea" of what 30 would look like and I felt like I was nowhere near that BUT then I had family and friends that reinforced my awesomeness and made me feel like I was on track so I stood strong in that (maybe a little too strong lol). I'll be the first one to tell you that it was a great celebration welcoming in a new decade but I was not prepared for all the life lessons and hurdles that 30 would bring.

I would have to say that one of my birthday wishes was for a peace of mind and ever since I blew out those candles at my 30th birthday party, my life got 10x crazier. At the time I was bitter, upset and overwhelmed and had no idea how to stay positive. Through reading inspirational posts, devotional emails and spending more time living in the peace I spoke about I realized that God has the right to operate outside of our own understanding. For the first time ever, I had no idea what God was up to but after awhile I stopped questioning and began realizing that everything I was going through brought would eventually bring me through/to this miraculous place that I'm at today and where I anticipate the next chapter of my life to go.

They say when you turn 30, your perspective changes and you see the world a little differently, ladies & gentlemen that is 150% true. I've never felt so many emotions and revelations in my life, like EVER. I feel renewed and I feel like the world is truly my oyster, I started making decisions and choices for me and I didn't allow the world to dictate my future. Although since turning 30 I've lost more friends than I expected, felt disappointed in my life choices, not encouraged and feeling like the world was caving in on me but it was my faith in God and hope that I will see the bigger picture someday.

Well that someday came when I was reading IamNecole and she spoke on making sure your cup is full so you can pour into others then the light bulb came on! I've got to start taking better care of myself because that is a reflection of how the world will treat you (Thank you Necole!). Having two jobs and living a very active social life leaves little room for "me time". I'm constantly clutching my calendar trying to schedule in happy hours/dinner dates and sometimes even time to just be alone. My life can get a little insane at times, but I dare not complain because I function better being busy. The idea of saying "yes" to everyone and giving more of my time to everyone else but myself has left my cup half-empty which in return does not benefit anyone at all. I'm taking IamNecole advice to say YES to me first aka "The Year of Me" to make sure that I'm truly fulfilling my purpose and making the necessary time to do things I love to ensure my cup is not only full but running over :)

Having a positive and hopeful perspective has proven to be a ground breaking freedom that I never saw coming (somebody cue BeyoncĂ©'s lemonade album). It has been all I need to help me get through difficult moments in my life because at 30 they will come and sometimes it's hard to see that it will go but it will (just breathe it out). It's so important to understand that even though there may be challenging or disappointing moments in life, realize that it's just that a moment and understand that there is powerful lesson to learned. The idea of being able to press the "reset button" as much as you want, gives me infinite peace I can't describe. Being able to set new goals, reach new heights and maximize your greatest potential has made me feel like it's okay to hit the reset button as many times as you need to.

Necole proposes a challenge (that I'm fully accepting) to get a journal and answer the one question "What do I want from my life?" this is the one question that always leaves me speechless because there is no right or "perfect" answer but makes you think about your dream life and the steps it takes to making it a reality. Between starting a new journal and devoting the next 12 months (beginning officially September 18th) to "The Year of Me" I can't wait to see how much life changes for me with a little reset in motion. Making yourself priority is not a selfish act and it's something I recently learned from a dear friend of mine, treating yourself the best leads to being able to give your best without leaving you empty. Wishing everyone an amazing week and end of Summer! Fall is coming :)

Etini Ruffle Gown by Temperley London
J.Crew gold sandals (old)

Summer has been keeping me quite busy, there has been many highs and a few lows but through it all it's been a game changer for the good. I always have these epiphany moments and I must say that Summer 16' has taught me a lot about myself and how to overcome things that are beyond my control. Anyway, as Summer is coming to an end with only about a month left, this is my last look from my Summer Series photo-shoot and I must say this dress is one of my favorites---it's super comfortable and gives me tropical vibes (must be my Island girl). I'm looking forward to Fall for so many reasons, September should be a good month! I hope everyone has been enjoying their summer, sending everyone lots of love x peace.

WHITE & GOLD

Happy Tuesday beautiful people! I took a fashionable pause to pay my respects to all that is happening in the world, although I'm not vocal on social networks it does not mean that I'm not constantly praying and thinking about the violence that ensues my community. I am a black woman with many black powerful men in my life that I value with my whole heart so taking some time to just think, pray and love has been my focus. Now that things have calmed down I wanted to share another look from my photo-shoot I did with Asia. This shoot was inspired by the many brides I have been styling for their pre-wedding events. I love the combination of white & gold so much, it's totally summer written all over it and definitely a combination you can wear over and over again.

A Night At The Kennedy Center

Last Friday, I had a much needed girls night out with my slay mates Tabby and Coco (they are my spirit animals). We attended the Broadway show called, “Kinky Boots” which is a 2005 British film about a black London drag queen named Lola who helps a Northampton shoe company reinvent themselves at the Kennedy Center located near Georgetown. The 2013 Tony Award for best musical is beyond amazing, it is aspiring and definitely a show you'll be talking about long after you leave the theatre. If you've never been to the Kennedy Center you are doing yourself a disservice, it's beautiful and filled with talent. I'm always in awe every time I go, and I highly suggest you checking out Kinky Boots if you need a good laugh! Let's get into the details, the dress code was SLAY of course(#nodaysoff) for a night out, so I opted for this gorgeous gown I've been stalking. Check out a few pictures from my night at the Kennedy Center below:

TRAVEL TIPS: I NEED A VACATION

Happy Friday! With Summer just a few days away, what better time is it to plan those trips you've been longing for or that vacation you've been saving for. Ever since I was a kid my parents instilled the importance of travelling and accumulating those experiences. It has shaped me into the woman I am today, I loveeee to travel and go on adventures. I'm super grateful for my job but occasionally a girl needs to get away and experience life outside of the 9-5 norm, you feel me? Having a passport at the toddler has certainly prepared me for many of my travelling experiences. My ultimate goal is to hit every continent by the age of 35, so far I've travelled to 3 out of the 7 continents; there is so much to see. I cannot wait to go on my trips I have lined up for the rest of the year. Anyway, I'm always being asked my travel tips and how I can afford to go on these trips so today your in for a special treat. I'm going to tell you a few secrets that will make planning your trip/vacation very easy. But, first I want to show you another look from my photo-shoot I did last weekend since it's very obvious that a travelling has been on my mind (how perfect is that?).

WHAT I WORE:
Zoie Dress by Urban Sweetheart
I Need A Vacation Clutch by Kate Spade New York
White & Silver heels by Zara (old)

10 TRAVEL TIPS:
1. Save! Save! Save! (It's super important to save at least 3 months before a trip--especially if it's an international trip)
2. Do Your Research (Goggle and travel deal sites should be your bestfriend (bookmark it and get on their email list), find out all the important details about the location you plan on travelling to---Do they like Americans? lol. Do you need a visa? What season is the best for tourists, etc.)
3. Who are you travelling with? I find it easier to travel with 3-4 people max (everyone can fit in a taxi together; you can room together; making reservations for dinners/excursions are easy because someone has a partner, etc.)
4. Plan your excursions before arrival. (Do your research on the best things to do in that city and always read reviews)
5. Make a list of travel essentials. (Making a list and crossing things off is soooo necessary, if you forget things easily then this will make your life 10x easier. Writing things down or putting reminders in your phone to buy your travel essentials/etc. will reduce the time you spend on packing).
6. The "Right" Lodging. (I'm a super fan at staying in hotels that make me feel good, I like to look at the ratings and make sure the accommodations are appropriate. Again, it's important to read the latest reviews when staying at hotels in international locations...find out what people are saying about the noise level or cleanliness of the hotel. I do have friends who love sites like airbnb...do what works for you and your budget).
7. Shopping. (I loveee to shop & rent but I try to place myself on a limit because we all know when you get to your travel location you can also shop there. So, definitely shop looks for your trip but also leave space in your suitcase for snagging an item or two from destination. It's no better feeling than saying "Oh I got this from Paris", it's like your own special souvenir that no one else will have).
8. Packing. (The dreadful---lay out everything and organize everything before you leave. I have never met anyone who likes to pack, so to make this experience slightly enjoyable I suggest playing some music and sipping your favorite adult beverage to really get you in the mood. I'm horrible about packing in advance so making the travel essential list makes packing easier and faster).
9. Shhhhh...not everyone needs to know your going out the country for 2 weeks. (My parents always taught me to be humble when it comes to travelling and meek when telling people. Nowadays, social media breeds the announcements of when people are leaving and departing from every location (I'm super against people knowing my every location. You have to be very careful when revealing your Delta789 flight leaving from BWI airport and arriving at Heathrow Airport at 9am the next day information. Safety is so important, be very careful with that information).
10. Be A Tourist and A Native. (I'm a super fan of being a full blown tourist when I travel and a native at the same time lol. Explore the entire city and take time to indulge in the culture of the place you are in--that means, limited time on the phone and more soaking in the place you worked so hard to travel too. Eat the native food, appreciate the culture, learn the language (just a little) and make it an adventure. Travelling is a privilege, not everyone can do it so make sure you accumulating these experiences and taking time to realize how blessed you are to see a life outside of the one your living).

This post is super special to me because every summer my parents would take us on a family vacation---most of the time it was to Orlando, Florida where we stayed at our timeshare and spent a week going to all the theme parks and just soaking up the sunshine state. With all that has happened in Orlando this past week, my heart aches and I can't help to have a special connection there (#prayfororlando). As years have past, we still do our family trips to various places and my father always reminds us of the importance of travelling. He's a military vet and gave me the best gift I could as for as a kid, a passport! This weekend is Father's Day weekend so as I reflect on these precious travel memories, I have to say that I'm super grateful for a Dad that is always there for me and can truly say that he is the best man in life..I can't wait to celebrate him.

Me with Dad in Orlando, FL and then at my Master's graduation. Same pose and always with the camera in his hand.
Happy Father's Day to all those amazing men out there, I see you and acknowledge your presence---you have no idea how much we appreciate you!
